Look For Less: Tamia’s Adian Mattox Printed Hi-Lo Hem Dress

While reading my favorite blogs, I came across this picture of singer Tamia wearing a $295 Aidan Mattox Feather Printed Hi-Lo hem dress with silver bangles, camel peep toe pumps and a thick gold belt.  She wore the dress to Russell Simmon’s Art for Life benefit.  The dress is gorgeous and as always, Tamia looked fabulous.

Later in the day I found myself on the Dorothy Perkins website thanks to Comme Coco and came across a printed hi-lo hem dress. The first thing that came to mind was “this reminds me of Tamia’s dress!” So of course I had to share this “look for less” moment with you!

Ladies if you want to achieve Tamia’s look, check out this $35 Dorothy Perkins Billie and Blossom multi colored floral dress.  You can wear it with a pair of nude pumps like the MICHAEL Michael Kors ones below, gold hoop earrings, a gold belt (the one below is from ASOS) and silver bangles.

I know some may be wondering; yes you can mix metals!

I may have to purchase this Dorothy Perkins dress. It’s great a option to dress up or down during these hot summer temperatures!

What do you think of the look?

Styled By Keri: Two Style Makeovers, One Consignment Boutique!

Last week I completed two style makeovers using pieces from TARI DC, a consignment boutique located in Georgetown, DC.   The makeovers were featured on SNOBSWAP along with a few fashion tips for different body types. Below are details  about the makeovers and the before and after pictures.

Devin is a mother of two young children which meant one thing: Comfort!! Originally I was going to style her in flats but once I found the dark denim jeans and printed top, I decided to turn her look into a day to date night outfit.  She can easily wear flats during the day and then switch to heels and a clutch for dinner in the evening with her husband.

For Erica, I wanted to give her a more sophisticated look.   She likes to wear baby doll style dresses. While they are great because they have an A-line silhouette, the dresses sometimes look young and depending on the cut may be too flared, added more volume than they should.

Let Us Love One Another

Unfortunately we all woke up this morning to news of the tragic theatre shooting in Aurora, Colorado.  Personally, I am deeply saddened by the news and pray for the victims and their families during this time of tragedy. We truly live  in a troubled world. While we won’t ever understand this act of violence or any act of violence toward others, we must try to live in love and peace.  President Obama gave a speech this morning regarding the shooting and I thought his words were an excellent reminder of how we should strive to live our lives:

Even as we learn how this happened and who’s responsible, we may never understand what leads anybody to terrorize their fellow human beings like this. Such violence, such evil is senseless. It’s beyond reason. But why we never know fully what causes somebody to take the life of another, we do know what makes life worth living. The people we lost in Aurora loved and they were loved. They were mothers and fathers, they were husbands and wives, sisters and brothers, sons and daughters, friends and neighbors. They had hopes for the future and dreams that were not yet fulfilled. If there’s anything to take away from this tragedy, it is a reminder that life is very fragile. Our time here is limited and it is precious. And what matters at the end of the day, is not the small things, not the trivial things that often consume us in our daily lives. Ultimately it’s how we choose to treat one another and how we love one another. It’s what we do on a daily basis to give our lives meaning and give our lives purpose. At the end of the day, what we will remember is those we loved and what we did for others.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. Take the time to tell someone you love this weekend icon smile Let Us Love One Another

If you follow me on twitter you may have seen tweets about an upcoming shopping soirée.  A Diva State of Mind has teamed up with Current Boutique to host a shopping soirée next Thursday, July 26th to benefit the Red Sprinkle Fashion Camp scholarship.

I met Rebecca and Madiana Margao of Red Sprinkle last month when I interviewed them for the latest issue of Façon Magazine.  The Fashion Camp provides free fashion classes to teen girls 13-17 years old in the DC area.  The classes focus on a variety of areas in the fashion industry including fashion blogging, wardrobe styling, hair and makeup and fashion photography.  Some classes are taught by celebrity hair and wardrobe stylists.   This camp is a great way for you girls to better understand the industry and begin to figure out what area of fashion they are most interested pursuing.

Not only does the camp offer FREE fashion classes but select students will receive a scholarship at the end of the 6 weeks to go towards their college education.

10% of the sales from the Shopping Soirée will benefit the Red Sprinkle Fashion Camp scholarship.  All attendees will enjoy refreshments and shop the latest trends. This event will serve as a great opportunity to shop and network with other fashionable professionals in the DC area.

Ladies if you need to shop for a new dress or fellas you need to get a gift for the special lady in your life, I encourage you to attend the soirée next week!!

Michael Vick Launches Sports Clothing Line V7

For all of you sports enthusiasts! Michael Vick is launching a new sports clothing line called V7 under a licensing partnership with celebrity clothing-line mogul Ruby Azrak and former ICM talent agent Brian Sher. The line will be sold exclusively at Modell’s Sporting Goods located on the East Coast.

The clothing line will feature gym shorts, T-shirts and tanks. Prices are $12.99 for children’s clothing and $19.99 for adult clothing. The shirts include mottos like “Mental Toughness” and “It’s Not How You Start. It’s How You Finish.”

What I love about this new venture is that Michael Vick is using it as a way to give back to the community. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Boys and Girls Club of Philadelphia. According to Vick,

“I never thought I would be a fashion designer. But it’s not about me. It’s about making an impact with the community.”

I am glad to see Vick back on track and hope his sports clothing line does well.  Anyone else ready for football season?!?!

NBA Stilettos: Would You Wear Them?

HERSTAR has teamed up with the NBA to create stilettos for all the ladies who are looking for a fashionable way to show support for their favorite basketball team. The goal of HERSTAR is to “adorn sports fans in fashion forward and sexy sports attire. ” The heels are available in suede or crystal ranging in price from $100 to $275.  HERSTAR’S founder Holly Joffrion said she came up with the idea after realizing that women love shoes just as much as their favorite team:

“We look forward to offering sports fans a high-end line of fashionable heels. We understand how much women love their shoes and recognize that going to an NBA game can be an event beyond the hardwood. We’re able to combine the love of basketball and footwear together, allowing female fans another way to display their passion for the game.”

While, I understand HERSTAR wanting to make sports fashionable for women, I just can’t imagine anyone wearing these stilettos.  Ok I take that back; I wouldn’t wear them.  As Jocks and Stiletto Jill so eloquently stated, “NBA team logos on women’s footwear screams CHEAP and TACKY! Slapping a logo on a platform heel and Italian sizing does not qualify as fashion.”

But that’s not the only reason I wouldn’t wear them.  I want to be comfortable when attending sporting event (since I don’t have the option of sitting in a floor seat like celebrities do where wearing heels is deemed more appropriate).  If I were going to wear heels to a game, I’d want to wear something that doesn’t have to be reserved just for a game.  I know people don’t have to only wear team logos to games, but let’s be real. If you saw someone walking down the street wearing these you’d give them the side eye.  The cost per wear is not worth it (I’ll do a separate post on cost/wear one of these days).

If these pumps are really a hot commodity, they seem like ones that will be hot for a minute and not the next. I first noticed the stilettos on other sites last month during the height of the NBA playoffs.  During that time everyone was in love with OKC and the Miami Heat, so I’m sure at the time the OKC and Miami Heat pumps were a big hit for some females fans at the time, but are they really hot now?!

So what would I recommend wearing to a sporting event?  Wear a fitted jersey or t-shirt with the team logo, skinny jeans and flat boots.  Don’t want to wear a jersey or t-shirt? Incorporate your favorite team’s color in your outfit instead.  If you can’t wear flats to sporting events, these looks will work with heels too.

If you do have a favorite NBA team and want to show your support by purchasing a pair of heels from HERSTAR, please don’t pair your Los Angeles Lakers purple and gold pumps with a purple and gold outfit. That’s doing ABSOLUTELY TOO MUCH! I just had to make that statement because you already know someone is going to walk around trying to be matchy matchy!!!
