Fundraiser: YES Yoga Has Curves

YES Yoga Has Curves Fundraiser: YES Yoga Has CurvesWhen I first met my client Dana, she was in the middle of shooting photos for her first book. She has worked tirelessly for the past year to put together YES, Yoga Has Curves, a book that captures the true essence of yoga with women in many shapes and sizes.

“In popular media only one type of yoga body is highlighted and there is little representation for fuller bodied women. Because of this, many women don’t think they have the “yoga body” and hesitate exploring yoga, even though it has countless benefits.

The book serves as a testament that yoga is for EVERYbody and that no physical size is better suited for practice. It celebrates beautiful goddesses of all curvy shapes and sizes and finally allows the beauty of our curves to be recognized in this blessed art called yoga.”

Although she is in the final stages, Dana needs the assistance of the community to get the book completed and distributed to the masses (final layout, final editing, marketing and printing). She has started a campaign asking for donations to help bring this book to life.

Now you all should already know that I don’t blog about things I don’t like or don’t support. Although Dana is my client, she’s also a great woman and a great yoga instructor. She has also worked extremely hard on this passion project and I want to do what I can to help. I made a donation last night and I’m using my blog as a platform to spread the word! It is important to support those around me who are hustling, like I am, to make their dreams a reality! We can achieve so much more when we come together and help one another.

If you love yoga or feel inspired to do a good deed today, please check out Dana’s campaign page HERE and consider making a donation to help her bring YES Yoga Has Curves to fruition. No donation amount is too small!

Fashion That Feeds: HALF UNITED Jewelry Fights Global Hunger

After the Social Learning Summit on Saturday, a few of us were admiring Meaghan’s (of the blog District Sparkle) necklaces. One was a fabulous statement piece from Baublebar. The other was a bullet necklace from HALF UNITED, which I later discovered is call the Fighting Hunger Necklace.

HALF UNITED is a jewelry company that was started five years ago by Christian and Carmin Black on less than $200. The goal was to create meaningful products in the US that not only support their small business community but also make a change in what it means to unite.

HALF UNITED donates half of the profits from items sold towards fighting the global hunger epidemic here in the US and overseas. The jewelry company partners with the Food Bank (in USA), Cape Fear Volunteer Center (USA), EAI (Cambodia & Madagascar) and Northern Christian Training Center (Fiji) to provide crops and gardens, fishing farms, backpack meals and education. To date, with the help of shoppers and their partner organizations, HALF UNITED has been able to provide over 100,000 meals to children.

The bullet necklace is of course a best seller on the website. It comes in a variety of gold and silver options. Along with women’s necklaces, HALF UNITED also sells women’s bracelets and earrings, men’s bracelets and necklaces and accessories like chains, anchor charms and logo stickers.

‘Love In The City:’ A Refreshing Take On Black Women And Reality TV

Saturday night, while most of you were probably out, I was at home sitting comfortably on my couch watching a new episode of Love In The City.

Love In The City Love In The City: A Refreshing Take On Black Women And Reality TV

Last year, OWN previewed the first episode of the new reality show. Love In The City centers around four friends in NYC as they navigate life:

Big Cities are never easy to navigate, but these four fabulous women, Kiyah, Bershan, Chenoa, and Tiffany are taking NYC head on. Having known each other for over ten years, they are close enough to always keep it real. Through their laughter, romances, and life-altering struggles, they are learning that there is much more than just sex in the city. They don’t always see eye-to-eye and spend a lot of time dealing with conflicts that arise between their big personalities. But underneath it all, they have an incredibly strong bond and always support each other as they deal with their own unique life challenges.

The description of the show is a familiar one. We have seen other reality shows that were supposed to focus on the lives of (black) women as they navigate life, romances and more (Blood, Sweat, and Heels, Married to Medicine, Real Housewives of Atlanta) but instead they became shows filled with drama, or the producers of the shows chose to only focus on the drama.  We haven’t really seen a reality show about black women that wasn’t filled with name calling, fighting (physical or verbal) or disrespectful behavior.  Love In The City may be the reality show we’ve been waiting for.

Love In The City Tweet Love In The City: A Refreshing Take On Black Women And Reality TV

I really appreciate that the relationship between the women is genuine; they love and support one another unconditionally. They may disagree; but they work it out immediately and move on. They cry together through each other’s trials and celebrate each other’s victories.

What I also enjoy about this show, and what I think so many others really appreciate about the show, is that we get to see real women going through some REAL LIFE issues.  Tiffany and Bershan are breast cancer survivors. We watch as Tiffany prepares for plastic surgery after having a double mastectomy. Bershan is weighing her options when it comes to conceiving. Kiyah is a woman who turns 40 soon and is ready to have a child; at the same time she finally decides to move back to New York after never really having a stable home because she is always on the road. Finally, viewers witness the pain Chenoa goes through after separating from her husband of 13 years. I appreciate their honesty to share some very intimate parts of their lives while also sharing jewels of wisdom along the way.

While I do indulge in the foolishness that is Real Housewives of Atlanta (don’t judge me…), I can definitely appreciate a show like Love In The City. Honestly, it is a reflection of any group of girlfriends who are trying to figure out life and genuinely love and support each other along the way. The stories of these women are a reminder that we all go through some ish, but what is important it is how we recover and the support system we have around us.

Have you watched Love In The City? If so, what do you think of the show? Anyone else feel like it’s a modern day ‘Sex in the City’ but with real women?

Check out Love in The City on Saturdays at 10pm on OWN.

P.S Did anyone attend the viewing party at Bar 7 in DC?? I’m disappointed I didn’t know about it!

EVENT RECAP: Best Of DC 2014 FÊTE

Last Wednesday, I attended the Washington City Paper Best of DC 2014 Fête at the Carnegie Library in DC.  The party honored the Best of DC, as voted on by City Paper readers and chosen by writers and editors. A portion of the proceeds from the party benefited Brainfood, a nonprofit youth development organization in Washington, D.C.

Best of DC 2014 Fete!

I arrived at 8pm with my friend Lisa to a building filled with people; it was quite packed!  Each floor in the library featured restaurants and bars offering samples of some of their best dishes and drinks. We tried meatballs from Carmine’s, burgers from P.J Clark’s, drinks from The Gibson and more. We also entered the raffle, hosted by Turkish Airlines, to win two free airline tickets to fly anywhere in the world but unfortunately neither of us won. Those would’ve been perfect for when I plan my 30th birthday trip!

Ran into my line sister Ebony Nicole at the Turkish Airlines table.

I had a nice time checking out the different restaurants. It gave me some ideas of the different restaurants I want to try this summer, especially those places that have brunch!  If you do plan on attending next year, I would advise arriving when the party begins. We showed up an hour after the party started and some restaurants were already out of food.

Styled by Keri: Shopping For A Spring Wardrobe

A day in the life of a shopping appointment with yours truly icon smile Styled by Keri: Shopping For A Spring Wardrobe

Most client appointments last for two hours but this past Sunday Celia and I were on a mission! We spent FOUR hours shopping to add new pieces to her wardrobe for the spring season. Whew!

Celia TJ Maxx e1397586646214 Styled by Keri: Shopping For A Spring Wardrobe

I had to be the proud stylist and take a picture. Celia put together her outfit featuring a TJ Maxx graphic tee I purchased for her last year, a pair of boyfriend jeans and mirror sunglasses. This look is casual, cute and comfortable; perfect for an afternoon of shopping.

After crafting a shopping list based on a closet audit, we started the day at TJ Maxx. You can get a lot for your money at stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls without sacrificing quality (i.e we found a nice faux wrap black/white printed Ralph Lauren dress). I went through racks and racks of dresses, pants, and tops pulling pieces for Celia to try on. After loading a cart full of clothes, we spent the next hour to an hour and half going through everything that was selected.

Our cart full of clothes. Yes I get a little carried away but it’s better to pull as much as possible icon smile Styled by Keri: Shopping For A Spring Wardrobe You’ll end up walking away with maybe a 1/4 of what is pulled to try on. The fitting room attendant looked us like we were crazy to have pulled so much stuff.

The focus was to find pieces Celia can wear that would give her business casual outfit options for work but could also work in more casual environments. The pieces purchased also needed to mix well with what she currently has in her wardrobe. After spending two hours in the store, Celia walked away with 11 tops, a pair of printed pants, Ralph Lauren dress and a nice tan handbag for spring.

Have fun mixing prints! Celia can pair this look with heels and a bright color cardigan to wear to work.

Final items selected from TJ Maxx that were added to her wardrobe.

TJ Maxx was just the beginning! We headed to Columbia Mall to continue our shopping excursion. We found great spring pieces from The Limited, LOFT and New York and Company including ankle pants, floral tops, pastel tops, lace dresses and jewelry. We concluded the appointment with a trip to ALDO to buy peep-toe leather booties Celia originally found online.  They will look great with boyfriend jeans and a blazer.

Here are a few of the pieces I selected for Celia to add to her wardrobe this spring season:

It’s hard to put into words the entire shopping appointment experience, but I wanted to give you some insight into what it’s like for a stylist/client shopping appointment, whether it is for a seasonal wardrobe update or special event. Some people HATE shopping, but with a stylist by your side to select pieces for you, it can be a less daunting task! Think of it as going shopping with your stylish friend icon wink Styled by Keri: Shopping For A Spring Wardrobe

Gentlemen’s Corner: Chicago’s Urban Prep Academy Achieves 100% College Acceptance For Fifth Consecutive Year!

We don’t often hear stories about our young black men’s academic achievement so I feel that it’s important that their success is celebrated! After reading stories about Kwasi Enin, Akintunde Ahmad, and Avery Coffey,  we can add the boys from Chicago’s Urban Prep Academy to the list of young men who are making great academic achievements this year!

Chicago Urban Prep Academy Gentlemens Corner: Chicagos Urban Prep Academy Achieves 100% College Acceptance For Fifth Consecutive Year!

For the fifth year in a row, Urban Prep Academy is sending all of its graduates to college this year. That’s right; all 240 seniors at the all male African American high school received acceptance letters to over 186 colleges and universities; amassing over $11 million in scholarships and grants. How awesome is that?!

This achievement not only speaks to the work of the students, but it’s also a testament to the teachers and staff at the Academy who work tirelessly to make sure these young men succeed!

“Urban Prep is not for everyone, and those students may leave us,” said school founder and CEO Tim King. “But the fact that some students choose to leave us should not be used as a weapon against the students who have chosen to stay and have achieved this incredible accomplishment.”

Last week, the Class of 2014 exchanged their red ties for a red and gold striped one, a tradition done in observance for those that have been accepted to a college or university.

“The tie represents to me moving on from a boy to becoming a young man and actually doing something with my life,” graduating senior Dumar Harris told NBC Chicago.

This is wonderful! Congratulations to Chicago’s Urban Prep Academy!
