EVENT RECAP: Conversations With June Ambrose

If you are a lover of fashion, a designer or stylist, one of the people you hope to meet is celebrity stylist, designer, author and rock mom June Ambrose!

Last Thursday, Harlem Fashion Row CEO Brandice Henderson celebrated the launch of Harlem Fashion Row University and the 2014 McCafe Design Student Competition by hosting Conversations with June Ambrose.  Click HERE for more information about the competition.

Prior to the start of the event, I had a chance to go backstage and meet with June. I served as the recorder for Naseya of The Seventh District who interviewed Ms. Ambrose. It was a great interview; please check it out below. I wanted to take notes while recording! Following the interview, the three of us chatted briefly about styling and things to think about when transitioning from part-time to full-time. Following our conversation, of course we all took pictures. I’ll be the first to admit, I was HYPE! I mean, how often do you get a chance to chat with someone you look up to in the industry?

After the private interview and taking pictures, we returned to the auditorium. For the next two hours, June Ambrose provided her insight and wisdom on a variety of topics including success, self worth, racism in fashion, branding and more! The conversation was a mix of questions asked by Brandice and students in the audience.

Here are some key takeaways from the conversation:

  • You have to assume that people are always watching. Especially with social media.
  • Styling is about branding. Branding of ourselves is important. That is how we tell our story.
  • We are the CEO of our lives. Whether you take on a job or start your own, you can still think like an entrepreneur.
  • Don’t worry about being famous. If you do the work, you will be celebrated.
  • Don’t take for granted the small things. Those small things are going to lead you to great things.
  • An opportunity can be presented to you and you can miss it if you don’t know what to do with it.
  • Consistently exercise your craft.
  • You should be glamorous in anything you do in life.
  • Don’t be afraid of yourself.
  • Know that you are WORTHY!

One thing I love about June Ambrose is that she is so humble and down to earth. What you see is what you get. Following the event, she spent time taking selfies with Howard University students and chatting with attendees until it was time for her to depart.

This event was truly the highlight of my week! As successful as this inaugural event was, I think Harlem Fashion Row University is on a path to providing great opportunities for undergraduate students of color seeking to pursue a career in the fashion industry.

If you are a fashion student at an HBCU, be sure to check out Harlem Fashion Row University and the 2014 Cafe Design Student Competition.

You Are Not Here To Be A Witness!

Me: I’ll just chill and crush from afar. I rather live vicariously through my friends.

One of my girlfriends: Okay but don’t make that your life story. You gotta be BOLD sometimes. Remember, you are not here to be a witness.

During a recent chat with my girlfriends, I inquired about what they do in order to stay out of a guy’s friend zone. I met a guy who is really nice and we went out to happy hour (the idea to go out was approached on a friendship level), however afterwards I thought to myself “I’m not sure I want to be placed in the friend zone just yet.” Can I say I really like a guy after one outing? I’m not sure. But I can say that I am intrigued and would be interested in getting to know him. Some would say that in 2014, if a woman is interested in a guy, she should say something and not be afraid to ask him out. That’s the same advice I received from my girlfriends but of course I punked out.

Life begins at the end of your comfort zone You Are Not Here To Be A Witness! It seems the older I get the more dating comes up with my parents. They haven’t pressured me into being married by now (I’m thankful for that), but every now and then my dad will ask “so are you dating anyone?” During my birthday lunch, somehow we got on the topic of dating and we talked how women should not be afraid to approach a guy if she’s interested; if you like what you see speak up! As I have heard time and time again, you cannot sit on the couch and expect something to happen. You have to put in time and effort. During my birthday party, one of my girlfriends Samantha asked about my single guy friend Charles because she thought he was cute. I asked her if she wanted to be introduced and she immediately said yes. I did my part and introduced them; they have been dating for the past month. Then last week, another friend called while she was on her way to go play pool with a guy she met the night before at Walmart.

So I started thinking, am I putting myself in a position to be a witness to life instead of participating in it, especially when it comes to my dating life? Don’t get me wrong, dating is not easy.  But am I really doing all that I can to put myself in a position to present new dating opportunities? As much as I say I want to date and put it on my vision board each year, I think subconsciously I have a fear of liking someone and being rejected again (based on many previous experiences). That cycle can get exhausting. I have become very comfortable with my single status.  But sometimes comfortable isn’t really living and after awhile, it allows you to be a witness to what is going on around you instead of participating.

one life act accordingly You Are Not Here To Be A Witness!

You are not here to be a witness not only relates to the dating life of a single girl who is almost 30 (seriously, where the hell did the time go???) but it also applies to life in general. Often times, we sit back and watch others LIVE. They are checking things off their bucket list. They try something new. They step outside their comfort zone which leads them to a path of fulfillment and purpose.  They grab life by the horns and enjoy each and every moment. That’s the life I want to live. I rather live a life of “oh wells” instead of “what ifs.” I want to say “well at least I tried” even if that means embarrassing myself.

I don’t normally have a motto for the year, but you are not here to be a witness just might be it for 2014. Dating is not the only area in my life that I feel like I have allowed myself to become a witness. And now that I have acknowledged that, I must be proactive in changing my behavior; not allowing myself to become comfortable. You are not here to be a witness is a nice reminder that we are not alive to sit on the sidelines and watch things happen. We are here to be an active participant in this journey called life.

Hmmm….Now should I call this guy and ask him if he wants to go out this weekend? icon wink You Are Not Here To Be A Witness!

Looks We Love: Erykah Badu, Ledisi & Solange Cover ESSENCE’s May Beauty Issue

I love Nia Long and Gabrielle Union like most, but after awhile it’s nice to see someone new on the cover of ESSENCE. For the May beauty issue, ESSENCE features three fabulous women: Erykah Badu, Ledisi and Solange.

According to their website:

At ESSENCE, we’re all about celebrating individual beauty, and that’s exactly what comes to mind with the three women gracing the cover of our May issue: Erykah Badu, Ledisi and Solange. Each of these artists have captivated audiences not only with their songs, but also with their style and beauty. And for each of them, it’s always about self-expression.

How Erykah Badu views her hair and clothes:

I view my hair and clothes as functional art. I’m my own stylist and I love it, but I am not trying to make a statement.

Erykah Essence Looks We Love: Erykah Badu, Ledisi & Solange Cover ESSENCEs May Beauty Issue

Solange on individuality:

We all have the option of how we want to express ourselves through our life, hair, style or whatever we decide. We shouldn’t be pigeonholed into any one category.

Ledisi on not taking her hair too seriously:

Although I’m known for my long, colorful locs, I still don’t take my hair too seriously.I experiment a lot, dyeing it and constantly switching styles to grab attention. My hair is one of my best accessories and changing it helps express who I am.

Styled by Keri: Serving GQ Realness & Jumpsuit Fabness!

It’s great to help clients get their wardrobes ready for a new season, but it’s even more fun helping them put together a look for a special occasion. My clients James and Celia attended a surprise birthday party this past Saturday. The dress code called for no jeans. Here are the looks we created.

James wanted to channel his inner GQ for the birthday party. Although we could have tailored pants he currently had in his closet and found a vest, James wanted a new outfit from head to toe and I completely understood. Sometimes when you know you have an event to go to, you just want a new outfit.  We spent a couple hours shopping earlier this month which resulted in a nice Tommy Hilfiger navy pinstriped three-piece suit (the jacket wasn’t necessary for the party), grey shirt and grey pinstriped tie. The look was completed with brown shoes and belt.

One great thing about having James as a client is that I am consistently challenged. I’m well versed in woman’s wear, but certain things like men’s suiting was a new avenue for me. It was also new territory for James since he’s lost weight last year and is working on dressing a new body.

When Celia first heard about the party, she was ready to go shopping for a gown!! But after seeking some clarification on the wardrobe, it was determined that she did not in fact need a gown; she just needed to dress up.

Last year, I found a black Urban Outfitters jumpsuit on sale for Celia which served as the perfect option for her to wear to the party. We went shopping earlier this month to find heels & accessories. After trying shoes on for what seemed like hours, we found a pair of black pumps from Nine West that had a black/white chevron design on the heels. Since she LOVES mixing prints, I recommended she purchase the Love, Cortie “Ashleigh” clutch.  Celia is in need of more clutches to her wardrobe arsenal anyway and since animal print is a neutral, she will get a lot of use out of the clutch.  The look was completed with black earrings from ASOS and a gold ring and cuff from Macy’s.

Celia really does become another person when she gets dressed up and shows off her new figure! I love the confidence she exudes every time she takes a photo.  It’s very different from the woman I met a year ago. Such a transformation!

Both James and Celia looked great at Saturday’s party if I do say so myself! ;) Their enthusiasm and upbeat personalities makes styling them so much fun! They own every look they wear. I am looking forward to more GQ moments and fabulousness with these two this year!

Spring 2014 Trend Report

Although it snowed on Tuesday, it is officially spring! Which means if you haven’t done so already, now is the time to start working on your wardrobe. The start of a new season warrants a time to take inventory of what’s currently hanging in your closet and look for ways to incorporate the season’s trends (of course ones you can wear year after year) into your wardrobe.

Here’s a list of the hottest trends of the season!

Crop Tops

Do a crunch or two because crop tops are here! This is probably the season’s hottest trends. Crop tops are everywhere. Keep the look classy and feminine, by pairing them with high waisted skirts or pants allowing just a little bit of skin to show.

While we are used to seeing bright colors during the warmer months, this year is all about pastels. Infuse this trend into your wardrobe with pastel dresses, shirts and jackets. If you don’t want to spend the money on apparel, add a pastel scarf or printed pastel scarf to your wardrobe; this will allow you to incorporate the trend without feeling like you’re fully committing to it like you would if you purchased a dress.

It wouldn’t be spring without florals. Like leather is a fall staple, florals are most certainly a spring staple! Have fun with floral dresses and tops. You can also switch things up and look to add florals to your wardrobe with a new floral clutch or shoes with floral details.

Florals 2014 Spring 2014 Trend Report

All White

Between pastels and all white, this spring season is all about clean lines. In this case, less is more! All white is a major trend this season and I think it’s one of the sexiest. You can wear dresses or tops with pants, skirts and shorts.

Tomboy Chic (aka sporty chic)

Love mesh, sweatshirts, bomber jackets, track pants and chunky heels? Then this trend is for you! Tomboy chic plays on the balance between masculine and feminine details. Pair bomber jackets with shorts, boxy tops with slim pants or mesh tops with skirts to create the perfect tomboy chic outfit.

Geometric Prints

Every spring season it’s all about prints! This year, along with florals, the focus will be on geometric prints. I’m glad to see geometric prints are popular this season; it is something different than traditional stripes. Geometric prints adds a breath of fresh air to the print trend as a whole.

Another sexy silhouette this season is sheer. Discretely show skin in a sexy but classy way with sheer tops and skirts or with pieces that have sheer panels.

The popularity of suits returns this season. But don’t be shy when it comes to your suiting options. Experiment with color and print this season; meaning you can have fun with colors other than black, grey and navy. Remember, visit a tailor; fit is key to looking great in a suit!

Ask Keri: Where To Buy A Feminine Black Trench Coat

We don’t often see trench coats with a feminine flair. “Traditional” trench coats are single breasted with a belt but don’t offer much else in terms of design. Although traditional, that can get boring at times.

Whitney is on the hunt for a feminine black trench coat and asked that if I found any to send them her way. While there aren’t too many feminine coats out there, I did find a few that offer fun feminine details like high/low hems, exaggerated collars, skater skirt silhouettes, ruffles and more.

If you’re like Whitney and want a less traditional black trench coat this spring season, check out these offerings below:

My Trip To The Dareen Hakim Showroom

A few years ago I came across the Dareen Hakim collection via social media. I loved collection of handbags and clutches so I reached out to designer Dareen Hakim for an interview (read it here). Since that interview, I kept in touch with Dareen and her team and last October I finally had a chance to meet her!

On a nice October day, I caught an early bus to NYC to visit. I arrived in the city around 1pm and headed straight to the Dareen Hakim offices. Dareen and her Marketing Director  Farah were so pleasant! We had a great time sitting around talking for hours about the collection, styling, fashion and more!

Farah introduced the current collection to me and allowed me to take a look at each piece. Dareen Hakim pieces are currently sold in 30 countries and 300 stores including  Charmed Boutique in Georgetown. I was impressed when I first saw the collection online; I was even more impressed seeing it in person. Sumptuous leathers, arabesque calligraphy, dramatic hues all form the basis of style for each creation.
