Get A Hobby: Petition Created To Comb A Child’s Hair

I was debating if I wanted to blog about this topic, but this needs to be addressed because folks really have too much time on their hands! This post might as well be called I Am Not My Hair 2.0.

Earlier this week, a photo of Beyoncé, Jay-Z and their adorable daughter hit the net. The family appeared to be returning from vacation (you can google the photo). What followed were comments swirling all over the internet about their child’s hair. SIGH…

I don’t need to spend time rehashing what was said. Let’s just say they weren’t too kind. According to people on the internet, Beyoncé and Jay-Z are neglecting their daughter.

My question is “why do so many people care?” It appears that the Carters were getting off a jet in the morning. They all look tired and were not there to impress the paparazzi. Maybe while flying back to NYC Beyoncé took out some twists. Maybe her little one was sleep on the trip back. Maybe that day while traveling, Beyoncé decided not to come her hair? Who cares?

I sat back and read blog comments on other sites about the picture (I really need to stop reading comment sections; it’s depressing how negative and offensive people can be behind a computer) and it amazes me how much people are worried about the hair of someone else’s child. That concern reached a new level when someone decided to create a change.org petition to comb a child’s hair. REALLY?!Have people become overly OBSESSED with hair? Let’s take a trip down memory lane when Gabby Douglass was making history at the Olympics. Instead of that being a proud moment, some  black people complained about her edges. Last time I checked, folks sweat when performing a sport or exercising so the likelihood of one’s hair not being perfectly in place is high (although there was absolutely NOTHING wrong with her hair).

Why are people so obsessed with the hair on someone else’s head? Are they projecting their insecurities? If the hair isn’t straighten or put into a specific hairstyle, is that deemed unacceptable? Seriously, what is the issue?

Jay Z and Beyoncé‘s daughter is under the age of three. I would hope at that age, there isn’t a lot done to her hair. Every child doesn’t need braids, barrettes, scrunchies and bows 24/7. Let her edges and scalp breathe!  Personally, I think she looks cute with her natural hair wild and free. But whether it was combed or not isn’t anyone’s business. She is surrounded by parents who adore her.  If she’s happy and healthy, what different does it make if the strands on HER head are “out of place?”

Creating a petition and continuing the negative dialogue surrounding a child is hurtful not only to the child but also her parents. If the roles were reversed, how would the woman that created the petition, or anyone else who has something negative to say, feel if people had something to say about the way their child looked, especially on a day when their hair wasn’t done? We all can’t be “on” 100% of the time.

Instead of starting a petition about the hair of SOMEONE ELSE’S CHILD, why not start one that will help to make a difference in this world? We really need to make better use of our time.

Personal Stylists Aren’t Just For The Rich & Famous

I’m not sure what comes to mind when you hear the word stylist, but just in case you are one of the many that believe only rich people or celebrities hire them, I’m here to debunk that myth!

Anyone, man or woman, can hire a stylist.  A stylist helps individuals organize their wardrobe, understand the type of clothing that works best for their body type and lifestyle, provide personal shopping services and more. Personal shopping services may include shopping for a specific event or updating one’s wardrobe from season to season.  The duties of a stylist are endless! These are services anyone can benefit from, not just the rich & famous.

Along with being a lifestyle blogger, I am also a personal stylist.  I decided to expand A Diva State of Mind into a styling business years ago because I love helping others look and feel their best. While working in retail, I preferred to be in the fitting room helping a woman find the perfect outfit for an interview or her birthday, rather than standing at the register.  It’s satisfying to know that I played a part in someone looking and feeling fabulous!

If you are in need of a stylist or THINK you may need one, please don’t hesitate to contact me for a consultation. Consults are free; they are a great way to determine what your specific styling need(s) may be and so much more. It’s a 30 minute conversation (sometimes longer) breaking down ways a stylist can help you elevate your current wardrobe or prepare you for a special occasion. If you know someone who can benefit from working with a stylist, please don’t hesitate to pass along my information to them as well. Visit www.styledbykeri.com for more information on styling services available and to view my portfolio!

Diva Spotlight: Audra McDonald Makes History With 6th Tony Award

While many of us were first introduced to Audra McDonald when she played Dr. Naomi Bennett on Shonda Rhimes’ Private Practice, McDonald has been on the Broadway scene for years. This past Sunday, she made history by winning the Lead Actress in a Play category, her sixth Tony Award for portraying jazz singer Billie Holiday in Lanie Robertson’s musical play Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill.

Not only did she win her sixth Tony, but McDonald also became the first person to win in all four acting categories. She also won Tony awards for the following: Best Featured Actress in a Play (A Raisin in the Sun and Master Class), Best Lead Actress in a Musical (The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess. I gave away tickets to this play on the blog  a couple years ago!) and Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Ragtime and Carousel).

Having trained at Juilliard School, Audra McDonald has worked for over 15 years in theatre and television. She received Emmy nominations for her roles on the HBO film version of the Pulitzer-Prize winning play, Wit, and made-for television movie adaption of A Raisin in the Sun (that was a good adaption by the way).   Oh yea, she also has two Grammys under her belt. BOSS!

Along with years on television and the stage, McDonald has also received the following awards for her work in the arts:  four Drama Desk Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, four NAACP Image Awards nominations, an Ovation Award, a Theatre World Award, and the Drama League’s 2000 Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theatre and 2012 Distinguished Performance Award.

Whew! Talk about accomplishments! Congratulations to Audra McDonald not only on her 6th Tony Award, but for being a trailblazer in theatre!

Anyone else feel like they need to take a trip to NYC to see her on Broadway??

Look For Less: Solange Knowles Gucci Silk Blouse & Wide-Leg Trousers

Beyoncé wasn’t the only Knowles sister at the Chime for Change one year anniversary party who shut it down in Gucci. Solange stepped out in an orange slit sleeve blouse and cream wide leg trousers. Seriously, I love this look! Between her CFDA red carpet outfit and this look, she’s been serving us some serious 70s glamour and I’m here for all of it!

White (or cream) is one of this season’s most popular colors. And since Solange is known for wearing color and print, it is no surprise she paired the trousers with a bright top which looks great against her skin tone. This look is perfect for an after five party. And as we know, wide leg pants are very flattering because they help elongate the body.

I couldn’t find a split sleeve blouse, but I did find a few orange blouses that will put you on the right path to recreating this look like one from Alice & Olivia and Farfetch.

Look For Less: Beyoncé’s White Gucci Jumpsuit & Platform Sandals

Beyoncé stepped out for the Chime for Change one year anniversary party last night in a fabulous all white Gucci jumpsuit. The jumpsuit features a deep v-neck, banded waist and straight leg pant with pleaded pockets. She paired the look with platform ankle strap sandals and a gold box clutch.

You all have heard the phrase “less is more” and this is a prime example of that statement! Given the color and cut of the jumpsuit, jewelry isn’t really needed.  The look is fresh, simple yet chic. Since we are headed into the summer season, a jumpsuit similar to this would be perfect for an all-white party; especially for those who want to shy away from wearing a white dress. As I’ve mentioned before, jumpsuits are a great alternative to dresses and are becoming more and more popular!

I couldn’t find a DEEP v-neck white jumpsuit like this Gucci one online, but you can recreate this look with the jumpsuits below. Asos offers a v-neck Warehouse Jumpsuit. They only have a size 10 is the only size left.  Other brands to try for a v-neck silhouette include Rachel Zoe and Trina Turk.
