Are Preachers’ Wives Held to a Higher Standard?

If you follow Meagan Good on social media or have seen her interviews, one thing we know for sure is that she is not shy about her love of God and Jesus Christ. I find her and her husband, Devon Franklin, to be quite inspirational. Franklin is the Senior VP at Sony and is also a preacher. His name may sound familiar; I did a review of his book “Produced by Faith.” Check that out here.

After seeing reviews of Good’s red carpet and magazine outfits, I often wonder, is she being held to a higher standard because she’s married to a preacher (her husband doesn’t preach at one church; he gives sermons at different events and is a guest preacher at churches in LA)? Since becoming married, we have seen her appear multiple times in the media in revealing outfits. At the BET Awards, she wore a DEEP v-cut dress.  And to add fuel to the fire for many, she presented the Best Gospel Award in that dress.

I recently saw her Complex magazine feature on NecoleBitchie.com and readers wasted no time complaining about her sexy outfits and poses. Some said, and I’m paraphrasing, “she’s a First Lady so she shouldn’t dress that way.” (She’s never called herself a First Lady and neither has her husband). Others have said that “she should be setting an example” or that she should dress in a more “respectful way” because she is now a married woman.

This is not the first time I have read criticism of Good’s fashion choices. I’ve seen them on multiple blog sites. But I wonder, is it because she’s married to a preacher she can’t dress the way she has been? There are a number of women we see in Hollywood who are wives and people aren’t complaining when they show up to an event in a revealing outfit or are featured in a sexy photo shoot. For example, Ms.Beyoncé. Don’t get me wrong, I am a fan of Beyoncé but she’s also married. Last time I checked, not too many people were complaining how her gyrating on stage or posing sexy in an issue of GQ magazine. Does she get a pass because she’s married to an entertainer? What about the fact that there are a lot of young girls that look to her as a role model? Should she be setting an example by not gyrating and posing in sexy photos too?

Meagan Good is just one of many women who are held under a microscope because they are the wife of a preacher. Are these women not allowed to be sexy?

A NecoleBitchie.com reader left this comment under the Complex Magazine post and I agreed with her:

In response to the controversy over her blue dress, Meagan Good reposted this message on Instagram after the BET Awards earlier this year:

What do you think? Should Meagan Good be less sexy in her fashion choices? Should those married to a preacher be held to a higher standard?

Looks We Love: Idris Elba for GQ October 2013

Idris Elba covers GQ October 2013 issue.  This man knows he can wear a suit!!  In the October issue, he talks about being on The Wire and more. Check it out!

On his role as Stringer Bell on HBO’s The Wire:

“That really is more about the writing of The Wire than it is the performance. You know, Stringer Bell is a great character that was written. I happened to play him, but it could’ve been anybody playing that role.”

GQ: You really feel like anybody could’ve played Stringer?
“Listen, I think I brought Stringer to life my way, but The Wire isn’t a classic because of Stringer Bell. The Sopranos was a classic because of Tony Soprano.”

On finding out he was not the father of a boy he was calling his own:

“You know, the truth is—like, even admitting it, I’ll probably get laughed at for the rest of my life. But it is just tragic, and it happened.” He looks directly at me when he says this. “But I wasn’t knocked out. I stood right the fuck back up, and I ain’t aiming to take another punch in the face ever again. Do you understand what I’m saying? It happened to me. I moved on.”

In a paradoxical way, he says, it was freeing. “I’ve not been an angel in my life, either—do you know what I’m saying? So to a certain extent, what goes around comes around. But for me in the future, I’m about being comfortable. That’s it.”

I wouldn’t date older men, but if I ever crossed paths with Idris Elba, I’d make an exception! *swoon*

New Talk Show: “The Real” Featuring Tamar Braxton, Tamara Mowry-Housley & More

When I first heard that FOX would be premiering a new show featuring Tamar Braxton, Loni Love, Adrienne Bailon, Jeannie Mai and Tamera Mowry-Housley, I thought “now that’s an interesting bunch!” Their personalities seem extremely different so I wondered if they would have great chemistry on a talk show.

I saw the teaser for “The Real” today and I must say this might actually work. The women are bold, outspoken and bring different perspectives to the table when discussing relationships, fashion, pop culture and more.

We haven’t really seen a talk show that features hosts in their 20s and 30s, so a show like this will be refreshing to watch.

“The Real” is set to premire this summer, July 17th on FOX in the following markets:

  • New York WNYW FOX5 at 12:00pm
  • Los Angeles KTTV FOX11 at 1:00pm
  • Washington D.C. WTTG FOX5 at 11:00am
  • Philadelphia WTXF FOX29 at 11:00am
  • Phoenix KSAZ FOX10 at 1:00pm
  • Houston KRIV FOX26 at 1:00pm
  • Tampa WTVT FOX13 at 1:00pm

QOTD: Would You Date Outside Your Race?

The “pitbull in a skirt” Eve is featured in the latest issue of Rolling Out Magazine. In her interview, she talks about her relationship with U.K. racer and entrepreneur Max Cooper. She spoke candidly about interracial dating; after all, like so many black women, she never thought she’d be with someone outside her race:

“I never thought I would date outside of my race,” Eve admits. “I never thought it would seriously be something that I considered because of where we come from. Interracial dating is still not as prevalent in our community. But when I met him, it was something that was so familiar. We recognize each other in a deeper way. If somebody is treating me the way I’m supposed to be treated, who cares what race he happens to be? It took a while for us to get comfortable, but when things got serious, we went for it. When we first started having pictures taken of us, I got so many negative tweets. It shocked me. I wondered where all of that hatred was coming from. It annoys me because America is a great country. But there are a lot of hypocrites. Would you rather me date someone, like my ex [Stevie J], just because he’s black? Or would you rather me be happy?”

It’s 2013, so crossing racial lines for love shouldn’t be a problem, but for some people it is.  As Eve pointed out, she received a lot of negative feedback when people found out her boyfriend was white. It is because she’s black? Is is because she’s a rapper so she’s expected to date black men?? If she’s happy, why does it matter if her boyfriend is white?

I’m all for people finding love in any color. If you like it and it makes you happy, that’s all the matters! Personally I prefer dating black men, but I guess I could learn a thing or two from Eve.  There’s nothing wrong with being more open minded. Love may not show up the way you imagine (race, culture, physical appearance, etc).  If love showed up in a different image than what you expected, would you be open minded enough to receive it?
Would you date outside your race? What are your thoughts on interracial dating?
Speak on it!

My Favorite Looks From The Met Gala 2013

The Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Benefit Gala aka The Met Gala (or Met Ball) was May 6, 2013 in New York. The annual event raises money for the Costume Institute and launches the spring exhibit. To date, the event has raised over $100 million. Each year, an exhibit is given a theme. This year’s theme is PUNK: Chaos to Couture.

One of the highlights of the gala is the red carpet. It’s always exciting to see what the attendees are going to wear. This is the one time where the outfit choices can be a little unexpected; after all, the gala does support a Costume Institute. While the red carpet choices were fabulous (Amber Heard, Taylor Swift, Jessica Alba and more looked stunning), there were a few people that stood out and embraced the punk theme or really embodied what I expect to see on The Met Gala red carpet.

Here are my favorites!

Anne Hathaway

Who is this woman and what has she done with Anne Hathaway?! Anne turned in her classic look for blonde hair and a vintage Valentino gown from 1992. HOT!!!

Nicole Richie

This is what I’m talking about. The theme is punk so why not go all out!? Nichole Richie arrived at the Met Gala in a white long sleeve Topshop gown and bleached white hair.

Miley Cyrus

Normally I’d hate this look but it works for the theme. Miley Cyrus showed off her punk style in a fishnet dress by Marc Jacobs and spiked blond hair.

 Madonna

On any other red carpet this would not work, but for the Met Gala, this Givenchy Haute Couture outfit is perfect! Should we be surprised that Madonna owned this theme? I mean, it is MADONNA!! All we need to do is take a trip down memory lane and look at some of her looks from the 80s/90s to know that achieving this look was not hard.

Madonna Met Gala 2013 My Favorite Looks From The Met Gala 2013

 Sarah Jessica Parker

If you’re going to show up at the Met Gala, you might as well show out! Can we talk about the Phillip Treacy Mohawk headpiece?! This masterpiece combined with the Giles Deacon gown and thigh high Christian Louboutin boots is perfect for the Met Gala! SJB will always be Carrie Bradshaw. I’m just sayin…

Rooney Mara

The white laced dress and strong shoulders paired with the dark lip is a great mix of femininity and edginess. Rooney wore a Givenchy gown and served as the co-chair of the event alongside Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci and Anna Wintour.

Minka Kelly

Minka Kelly looked great in Carolina Herrera.  Perez Hilton described this look perfectly; a combination between punk and Greek goddess.

Nina Dobrev

Leather and a corset; two must haves if you want to encompass punk into a look. This Monique Lhuillier look is not over the top edgy, but like Minka and Rooney’s outfit, it’s a nice mix of edginess and softness with the lace. And I love that there are lace pants underneath the skirt. Something very different than what we’re used to seeing on the red carpet. I’d wear this outfit.

Jennifer Lopez

I was going to stop the list at Nina Dobrev but then I went through some pictures of the red carpet again. I don’t know if animal print is punk, but this Michael Kors dress is HOT! J.Lo added her own interpretation of punk with what looks like a Mohawk inspired hair style and smokey eyes.  This woman can wear anything!

Looks We Love: Denzel Washington For GQ October 2012

Now this is how you wear a suit!! Denzel Washington’s dapper self covers the October issue of GQ.  In his interview with GQ’s Michael Hainey, Washington discusses starting in the business, his biggest roles and the code he lives by.

Do you have any code you live by?

I read from the Bible every day, and I read my Daily Word. I read something great yesterday. It said, “Don’t aspire to make a living. Aspire to make a difference.”

Looking good Denzel! To read his full interview with GQ, click HERE.

Looks We Love: Boris Kodjoe & Nicole Ari Parker For Rolling Out Magazine

YES YES YES to this week’s Rolling Out Magazine cover!! Boris Kodjoe and Nicole Ari Parker are hot and in love.  I look forward to experiencing a love like this.

Can you describe for us what it was like when you first realized that you loved each other?

Nicole: Boris might have a different version, but from my side there was immediate chemistry, and that’s not necessarily sexual. It was just immediate understanding, flow of conversation, intellect, and an instant trust….The great thing is that we really were friends first.  When you’re shooting 14 hours a day on a set, you see a lot.  He saw me when my eyebrows weren’t tweezed and when my gray hair came in, and when I was in my pajamas at five in the morning going into the dressing room. So we had no choice but to be really real from the very beginning.

Your thoughts Boris?

Boris:  What she said was so true and poetic. We had instant chemistry, and right away there was an attraction, but it was more on a spiritual level.  I knew right away that she was going to be in my life forever.  I didn’t know in what capacity, but I just felt that.  That just happens when you meet a person that is on the same wavelength.  We saw eye-to-eye on so many things.  She was open minded, well traveled, and had a great sense of humor — which are all very important to me.  The fact that she became my wife was definitely a bonus.  It worked because we were friends and liked each other as people first, which is very important in a relationship.  You can fall in and out of love, but if you like each other as people, then I think that’s a great foundation to grow a relationship, and we had that, so I’m very lucky.

Here’s the last question for each of you to answer:  “I’m a better person today than I was before marriage because…”

Boris: I’m a better person today than I was before marriage because my wife makes me a better man.

Nicole: I’m a better person today than I was before marriage because I get to care about one of the greatest human beings on the planet.

Looks We Love: Muhammad Ali & Grandson Pose For New Louis Vuitton Ad

Muhammad Ali and his grandson Curtis Muhammad are featured in a new Louis Vuitton ad that is scheduled to hit magazines this month.  Ali and his grandson join others celebrities who have worked with Louis Vuitton including Angelina Jolie, soccer player Pelé and musician Keith Richards.

According to the The Wall Street Journal:

The ad, which will run in magazines and newspapers in 60 countries, seems to capture Mr. Ali in private reverie. Photographed last month by Annie Leibovitz in his Phoenix backyard, Mr. Ali watches with pleasure as a young boy stands with fists gloved, feet splayed, chest puffed. Though not identified in the ad, the child is his grandson, Curtis Muhammad Conway Jr. A $1,525 Louis Vuitton “Keepall 50″ bag lies by Mr. Ali’s left foot….

Is Brian McKnight Having A Mid-Life Crisis?

brian mcknight Is Brian McKnight Having A Mid Life Crisis? Is Brian McKnight having a mid-life crisis? I’m serious?! That has to be the only explanation for why he is singing about showing women their how p*ssy works and Anal for YouPorn.com.

The Brian McKnight I know is one who had ladies swooning after him over songs like “Back at One” and “Anytime.”  He wrote beautiful ballads that you imaged singing to your significant other. His music was classic 90s R&B.

But today, I don’t recognize this Brian McKnight.  Does he really expect us to take him seriously with these songs? Now I know the current state of R&B is really pop music and artist like Chris Brown talking about seeing a woman strip; or Trey Songz singing about neighbors knowing his name. While “R&B” songs today lack romance and imagination, Brian McKnight’s two song that have been spreading across the internet are straight ratchet!

I wonder if McKnight is releasing these types of songs for attention. Actually I take that back, I know he is. Creating songs that are so far left from what people expect is a great way to draw attention and become relevant for 15 minutes.  But why do it? Does he miss the spotlight? Does he not know what to do with himself now that he’s older and his songs no longer play on the airways?

After the YouTube video below spread across the interest like wild fire, Brian McKnight claimed it was all a joke. He even created a video on the parody site Funny or Die.  But I don’t believe him, I think he was very serious making these songs.

Whatever the case may be, he needs to remind himself that anything he does now will have a direct impact on his legacy.  Instead of people remembering him as a great R&B artist of the 90s, they’ll remember him as the 43 year old guy trying to school ladies on how their cookie works.  I appreciate his attempt to try and school us, but I really don’t think anyone wants take advice from him; that’s kinda awkward.

Maybe the next song we hear from McKnight will actually be a sweet romantic ballad.  But since the reaction has been mixed, maybe he’ll move forward with creating a full adult mixtape.  Either way, the damage is already done.  If he ever decides to create real R&B music again, his attempt will be forever tainted with this YouTube video:
