Style Suggestions For Stella & Dot Jewelry

A few months ago I attended a Stella & Dot trunk show.  I had heard of Stella & Dot before but wasn’t too familiar with the company and the jewelry pieces they offered.   Too bad I didn’t pay attention sooner!  Stella & Dot has some great statement pieces in their collection at a variety of price points, making the collection affordable for everyone!

For the trunk show, I was asked by the Stella & Dot stylist to create four looks using pieces from the spring collection.  If you have purchased Stella & Dot jewelry this year or are considering doing so, here are a few suggestions on how to wear some of the most popular jewelry pieces from this season’s collection.

If you are interested in viewing more pieces or would like to host a trunk show, please click here or contact Timika Waldron at (301) 244-8837.

Ask Keri: Are Maxi Dresses Fashionable This Year?

I received an email from Carol and she asked:

Are maxi dresses fashionable this year?

Absolutely!! Maxi dresses are a summer staple. They never go out of style and can be worn dressed up or down for so many different occasions.

If you’d like to play on this seasons trends, look for maxi dresses in bright colors and prints. If you prefer maxi dresses in solid neutral colors, used accessories like hats, colorful sandals and bold handbags to add some visual interest to the look .

;

;

Petite women can wear maxi dresses too! Sites like ASOS sell dresses in petite length. Gap and Banana Republic are great retailers to try as well since most of their clothing is available in three lengths online: petite, regular and tall. Ann Taylor and LOFT also sell clothing in petite length.

Another option is New York & Company. A petite friend of mind found a maxi skirt from the store long enough for her last year. Many dresses hit the ankle for someone my height so they just may be long enough if you’re shorter than 5’4″. If you’re out and you find a dress that you absolutely can’t live without but it’s too long, purchase it and have it tailored.

Check out these bright and bold maxi dresses below:

Tom Ford Fall 2012 Collection Video Teaser

Tom Ford recently released a 1:12 minute video teaser showcasing his new Fall 2012 collection that has been seen on the red carpet, worn by Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lewis.

The video is short and the looks go by quickly.  However, it does give us a glimpse into what we can expect to see once the full collection is revealed; very sophisticated and streamlined pieces.  He definitely knows how to make a woman look sexy!

Demand Justice For Trayvon Martin

By now I hope you have heard of Trayvon Martin and the injustice he and his family are facing. Just in case you haven’t, here’s what happened last month that has caused so many of us to stand up and fight for justice to be served:

From JusticeforTrayvon.com:

George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain, saw a young man, carrying an iced tea and a bag of Skittles, slowly walking home, wearing a hoodie. It was raining. Zimmerman decided that wearing a hoodie while it was raining and walking home in the 7pm hour was ”suspicious,” so he called 911 to report him. The 911 operator told Zimmerman to NOT follow him. Zimmerman disregarded that command and followed the 17 year old anyway, even though he was told that police were on their way. Zimmerman got out of his truck and claims that an altercation ensued. Zimmerman then fatally shot Trayvon Martin in the chest. Trayvon had NO weapon, he had done NOTHING wrong, and was approached by a stranger driving a truck, a large man carrying a 9mm pistol.

More information has been released since this tragic incident.  Think Progress has provided a list of facts; here are just a few of them below:

1.  Zimmerman called the police to report Martin’s “suspicious” behavior, which he described as “just walking around looking about.” Zimmerman was in his car when he saw Martin walking on the street. He called the police and said: “There’s a real suspicious guy. This guy looks like he’s up to no good, on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around looking about… These a**holes always get away”

2.  Martin’s English teacher described him as “as an A and B student who majored in cheerfulness.”

3.  According to neighbors, Zimmerman was “fixated on crime and focused on young, black males.”

4.  Three witnesses say they heard a boy cry for help before a shot was fired. “Three witnesses contacted by The Miami Herald say they saw or heard the moments before and after the Miami Gardens teenager’s killing. All three said they heard the last howl for help from a despondent boy.”

5.  The officer in charge of the crime scene also received criticism in 2010 when he initially failed to arrest a lieutenant’s son who was videotaped attacking a homeless black man.

6.  The police did not test Zimmerman for drugs or alcohol. A law enforcement expert told ABC that Zimmerman sounds intoxicated on the 911 tapes. Drug and alcohol testing is “standard procedure in most homicide investigations.”

7.  In a cell phone call moments before his death, Martin told a teenage girl that he was “hounded by a strange man on a cellphone who ran after him, cornered him and confronted him.” “‘He said this man was watching him, so he put his hoodie on. He said he lost the man,’ Martin’s friend said. ‘I asked Trayvon to run, and he said he was going to walk fast. I told him to run but he said he was not going to run.’ Eventually he would run, said the girl, thinking that he’d managed to escape. But suddenly the strange man was back, cornering Martin. ‘Trayvon said, ‘What, are you following me for,’ and the man said, ‘What are you doing here.’”

This incident happened last month and Zimmerman has not been arrested.  When the story first broke, there were reports that he wasn’t arrested because he acted in self-defense AND had a “clean background,” but being arrested in 2005 for resisting arrest and battery of a police officer would suggest otherwise.

Many want to shy away from whether or not Zimmerman not being arrested has anything to do with race.  I’m going to keep it 100% real. Had Zimmerman been a black man and Trayvon a white 17 year old boy, there is no doubt Zimmerman would be in jail right now; regardless if he claimed self-defense or not. Far too often when it comes to black males, they are guilty until proven innocent.  Black people, especially males in this country are treated as if they are dispensable.

I was watching the news this morning and a friend of Zimmerman discussed how many people were on edge recently due to a number of burglaries in the neighborhood by young black teenage boys.  Being on edge is one thing and understandable, however that does not give someone the right to follow a black teenager and shoot him.  All black teenagers are not thugs looking to cause trouble (another stereotype our black boys face in this country).

Britini Danielle from Clutch Magazine has suggested three ways we can help get justice for Trayvon Martin:

Hit the tweets: Urge celebrities to sign and share the petition to get Florida officials to arrest and prosecute George Zimmerman. They have millions of followers and can quickly spread the word. Don’t forget to sign the petition too!

•Tweet: Pls sign & RT the petition to bring #TrayvonMartin’s killer 2 justice. His family deserves answers http://chn.ge/xc4oze

Write a letter: Many around the web have decided to start a letter writing campaign, and some have even said they will send empty Skittles wrappers to Chef Bill Lee. Send a letter to Sanford police chef Bill Lee to express your concern about his department’s handling of the case.

•Bill Lee, Chief of Police

Sanford Police Station.
815 West 13th Street.
Sanford, Fl 32771.

[email protected]; 407.688.5070 – Office; 407.688.5071 – Fax

Stay informed: Knowing the facts and educating others about them is key to continuing to spread the word about Trayvon Martin. Visit www.JusticeforTrayvon.com for more details.

I hope you will join in demanding justice for Trayvon Martin.  I pray for him, his family and black men in this country.  Even in 2012, some things still haven’t changed…

Join The “Look Good.Do Good. Movement”

Fashion Empowering Women (FEW) Foundation’s tagline, “Look Good. Do Good.” is more than a slogan, it is a movement, a lifestyle: the idea that a generation of tastemakers can care as much about social issues as they do about personal image and fashion. FEW aims to mobilize a generation to understand the value of their time and talent by giving back to their communities.

The goal of the movement is to create awareness among 50,000 millennials (age 18-30) and engage them in supporting various non-profit organizations.  Through a national multi-faced effort mainly online via social networks and partnerships with celebrities, community members, professionals and more, FEW hopes to raise $50, 000 for deserving non-profits.

We’re audacious enough to believe that we can change the world. But we know that we cannot do it alone. We need you your ideas, your passion, your voice and service. Together, we will bring social good into mainstream conversation- and make it a part of pop culture. After all, unlike the latest “It” bag, giving back never goes out of style” proclaimed Desiree Venn Frederic, FEW Founder and Executive Director.

Until June 2012, various events will take place monthly to reinforce the campaign message and allow participants to celebrate their commitments.  Events include: See Yourself: The State of Girls and Women Forum, Vision Board Brunch, Wardrobe Swap, Tweet-ups, The Vagina Monologues, Anti-Bullying 5K walk in partnership with Dreams Work Inc, United Way and YMCA, and more.  Each event will be hosted in conjunction with non-profit partners and sponsoring brands to expose them to campaign participants.

Fashion Empowering Women® (FEW) is a non-profit foundation that mobilizes the creative industries of fashion, music, literature and film by creating opportunities for its members to support the missions of social service organizations that empower girls and women. FEW focuses its efforts on women and those factors that are key to breaking the cycle of poverty, education, shelter, health and nutrition, and family services.

I love FEW’s mission of raising money to support non-profits that are making a direct impact in the local community! Smaller non-profit organizations are the ones that need support the most.

WTF?? Men’s Pantyhose and Tights aka Mantyhose

Ladies, how would you feel if your man started wearing tights? Yes, tights like the ones we wear during the winter season to keep your legs warm?

Fashion sites have been buzzing about a new trend in men’s accessories: mantyhose.  According to New York Mag, 2 to 3 percent of annuals sales for hosiery retailer Emilio Cavallini are by men.  With the trend rising over the past three years and to cater to demand, Cavallini decided to create unisex tights that allow for greater breathability:

“When we started our online shop we noticed that a lot of tights sized medium-large were being purchased by men.  So I did a search on the Internet and discovered there is a cult following for mantyhose.”

According to Clutch Magazine, the retailer claims that men are wearing the pantyhose the same way women do; underneath clothing for an extra layer of protection from the cold or underneath shorts; this looks has been seen on Italian men.  Have men not heard of long johns?

It’s one thing for men and women to wear matching hats or shirt, but matching tights? Absolutely not; this is a hot mess!  Just like men wearing skinny jeans, these should be off limits for men too!

What do you think of mantyhose?
